“I am very happy with the efforts of everybody.”

“The 2-1, of course, is avoidable and that brought an edge to the last three minutes, but we can only say that Chelsea deserved to win and we were very consistent in the first and second halves.

The Blues boss was happy with how his side claimed all three points thanks to goals from John Terry and Daniel Sturridge. Ji Dong-won’s injury-time goal was merely a consolation for Steve Bruce’s men.

“We just have to go step by step on it. We have two days to rest only before the Leverkusen game with Bayer having one day extra to rest, and we have to focus on getting the first three points before going to Valencia.”

On Tuesday, Chelsea will entertain German outfit Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge and Villas-Boas is keen to add trophies, in particular the Champions League which many of his predecessors have failed to do.

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has turned his attentions to the UEFA Champions League following their 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

“I just have to focus on what the owner has told me. One of his obsessions is to play well, and that’s what we try to do,” he said.

On the victory at the Stadium of Light, Villas-Boas added: “Today, it went very well for us in terms of what we want to achieve, not that we haven’t tried to do it before, but it just didn’t happen in the other three games.

However, Podolski’s representative Kon Schramm has told The Guardian it is ‘all but impossible’ any interested party will manage to persuade the player to move mid-way through the season, as his sole focus is on maintaining his current good run of form ahead of Euro 2012.

Lukas Podolski will not leave Cologne in the January transfer window because he does not want to jeopardise his Euro 2012 hopes.

The Germany international has been repeatedly linked with a move away from his hometown club, with Arsenal said to have made Podolski their number-one transfer target.

“Cologne has priority right now; we have time (for everything else) in the (European) summer,” Schramm said.

Podolski has been in fine form for Cologne, with his 14 goals in 16 league appearances helping the club to 10th on the Bundesliga table.

Podolski to reject January move

Podolski is out of contract at the end of the 2012/12 season, in what is his second spell with Cologne after leaving in 2006 to spend three years with Bayern Munich.

The fans may want him to stay, so to some of the players but it looks as if Carlos Tevez’s time as a Manchester United player is coming to an end. His agent has confirmed that the club haven’t offered him a contract beyond his current deal which expires later this month. Being prepared to release the Argentine graphically shows the depth United have in their squad but equally, it proves that Sir Alex Ferguson has a cast iron grip on the comings and goings at Old Trafford. Never one to be swayed by sentiment, If SAF is happy to let Tevez walk out the door, then be assured it’s because he has a plan to make the club stronger without him.

After turning down the appeals of Darren Fletcher, Eric Abidal and Dani Alves, who have all been banned from the Champions League final, Uefa issued this statement: “All three players are suspended for one Uefa club competition match and will serve their suspensions when Barcelona meet Manchester United in the Uefa Champions League final in Rome.” You’ll notice that they don’t defend their decision or offer any reason’s behind it. Should we be shocked by this? Of course not. Particularly as in the cases of Fletcher and Abidal, Uefa are hiding behind the letter of law. Surely, as the guardian’s of the sport in Europe, the governing body should be setting a common sense example as opposed to offering us an approach that looks like it’s been borrowed from a 1960′s KGB hand book.

Coyle award

When the awards are handed out for manager of the season, it won’t be too surprising if the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson or Guus Hiddink take the honours, but I’d suggest looking a division down to the Championship. Burnley had a fabulous run in the FA Cup, were within minutes of reaching the Carling Cup final having beaten Arsenal and Chelsea and now they’ve made it through to the play-off final at Wembley after a masterful win over Reading. Step forward Owen Coyle. Surely one of ‘the’ management performances of the season.

What game were they watching?

The British football press has its fair share of critics but having spent a few days in Spain this week, I can report that we don’t know how lucky we are. According to the Spanish sporting papers, of which there are many, football was the winner when Barcelona made it through to the final of the Champions League at Chelsea’s expense. Apart from one newspaper which always leans towards Real Madrid, it’s been a Barca fest over the past few days. Mind you, there’s been no mention of the 4 penalty appeals that Chelsea had turned down, nor has much been made that Barcelona managed a risible total of 1 shot on target in 94 minutes. No, apparently, Barca’s passing and possession were the reason they progressed. Not the fact that they did virtually b****r all with it!

Really, I don't much care one way or the other but here's what I don't understand. Who has said anything about what they're doing being illegal or needing to be in some way regulated by the government? Of course they're a private entity. And because of that, they can feel free to exclude women as they wish. On the other hand, those complaining are private citizens and free to do as they wish. That includes complaining to the sponsors and other groups associated with the club and, for example, refuse to do business with those companies and organizations until they dissociate or the policy changes.

Isn't that they way disputes like this are supposed to be handled? Someone doesn't like what they're doing so they choose not to associate with them. If they believe strongly enough, they write letters, complain, try to get others to see their point, etc. If there are enough against it, they cause enough "pain" with their dissociation and things change.

It doesn't mean anyone is prevented from having such a club, just that if that club wants to be a public entity and gain from the public as a whole (with sponsorships and such), they better make sure enough of the public supports their positions to make the gain worth it.

Whilst we can see Speed’s point that the move is likely influenced by adidas (well, they wouldn’t want someone wearing Nike boots in their ads, would they?) we’re inclined to wonder whether has Speed’s Welsh team not lost 5 of their qualifying games, would Ramsay and Bale be considering Olympic duty at all?

Welsh manager Gary Speed has unleashed a veiled attack at Team GB kit supplier adidas over the appearence of Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale in the new .

The two stars have become the very first players to show any sort of allegiance to the Team GB cause since the announcement of Stuart Pearce and Hope Powell as coaches for the ‘super-team’ last month.

Both Ramsay and Bale have appeared in promotional shots for the new?, but their national team coach – who managed the two stars in an unsuccessful Euro 2012 qualifying campaign – has blasted the move as ‘propaganda’ from adidas

“The fact they are Welsh and wear a certain type of has probably influenced that.

If you like the look of the new?, it’s on pre-order in the Footy-Boots.com store now, for release on the 10th of November 2011.

Speed’s outburst follows in stark comparison to outspoken Welsh international Craig Bellamy, who spoke out in support of the brave move by the two young players;

“Fans have to understand they can’t blame Gareth and Aaron for this. They are being used for propaganda.”
